Texas A&M softball coach Jo Evans signed a class of four players Wednesday that are expected to make a big impact on the program. Evans and staff are pleased to receive National Letters of Intent from Amanda Scarborough of Magnolia, Texas, Megan Gibson of Spring, Texas, Jamie Hinshaw of Missouri City, Texas, and Jami Lobpries (Low-price) of Wharton, Texas.
"I think that this is a great class of recruits. I am very excited about the athleticism and potential that these girls will bring to our program. This is one of the best classes that I have ever had, it is definitely the most athletic, collectively, that I have ever had. I think this class will make an immediate impact on our program. They bring a great combination of power, pitching, and speed."
Scarborough is a pitcher/first baseman who enters her fourth year on the varsity team at Magnolia High School. In her first three seasons she earned numerous awards including first team all-district and all-Montgomery County three times and first team all-greater Houston in 2002 and 2003. She was named the District 16-5A Co-MVP in 2003 and she landed spots on the first team all-state and first team NFCA Louisville Slugger All-American teams. She was also named the Newcomer of the Year in 2001. Scarborough is listed as a "Who's Who Among American High School Athletes and America's High School Students" and is ranked eighth in her class.
"Amanda has dominated at the high school level. She throws the ball hard and can throw the ball up. She is also powerful at the plate. I can see her in an RBI role for us driving in a lot of runs."
Gibson is a pitcher/third baseman who plays for the Spring High School Lady Lions. She is in her fourth year as a member of the varsity team where she has earned first team all-district infield honors in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She was named the team and district MVP in 2003 as well as a member of the First Team All-Greater Houston team and first team all-state team. Gibson led all Houston area pitchers in strikeouts in 2003 and was named the Houston Chronicle Female Athlete of the Week one time. She is also a member of the honor roll at Spring High.
"Megan is a great athlete with a great attitude. She can play third, she can pitch and she is a great hitter. She will probably be a three or four hole hitter eventually. Megan hits the ball for power and always makes things happen."
Lobpries will join the Aggies in 2004 as an infielder/outfielder from Wharton High School were she enters her fourth varsity season with a batting average of .541. She was named the District 28-3A and Wharton County Newcomer of the Year in 2001 and was named the district offensive MVP in 2003. That same year she was named as the Wharton County MVP and first team shortstop as well as a member of the Victoria Advocate First Team. Lobpries has been named as an Academic All-District performer in all varsity sports for three years and is a Member of the National Honor Society. She competes in softball, basketball, cross country, track, swimming and club soccer. She is a member of FCA, Student Council, the Interact Club, Spanish Club, Jr. Lions and has been the class president for four years.
"Jami is very athletic. She got a lot of her experience growing up by playing baseball. She has great speed an quickness and is aggressive. Jami also comes from an Aggie family. Both of her parents went to A&M."
Hinshaw is a shortstop from Elkins High School in Missouri City were she has earned first team all-district honors three times, was named to the UIL State All-Tournament Team in 2002, and was a First Team All-Greater Houston and all-american in 2003. She was also a 2003 all-state Honorable Mention selection. Hinshaw is a member of the National Honor Society and has been recognized for academic excellence. She is involved with BETA and is a Young Life Leader.
"When Jamie gets on the bases she makes things happen . She has great speed and some of the best instincts I have ever seen from a player her age. When she gets on base she finds a way to score. She is an upbeat player that can play both infield and outfield. She hits from the left side and can hit doubles or lay down a bunt and beat it out. She is strong for her size."
