Coby Mavroulis had five hits and four RBI to lead No. 21 Texas A&M to a pair of wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon in front of 4,501 fans at Olsen Field.
The Aggies (3-0) needed an extra frame to win the first game, 4-3, and doubled the Islanders' (1-5) run output in game two in a 10-5 win.
The Islanders took the early lead in the second game as well when Schlekewy scored from third on a fielding error in the top of the first.
The Aggies responded in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to make the score 5-1. Erik Schindewolf, Cliff Pennington and Cory Patton all walked to start the inning. A pair of fielding errors and singles by Mavroulis, Andrew Baldwin and Austin Boggs pushed the five runs across.
A&M-CC cut the lead to two in the top of the third when Josh Hulin connected for a three-run homer. The homer was Hulin's first of the season.
A&M starter Robert Ray lasted just four innings before being replaced by freshman and College Station native Kyle Nicholson. Ray allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out four Islander hitters.
The Islanders scored a single run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one. Mike Schlekwy doubled off the wall in right to score Jaime Landin, who walked earlier in the inning.
The Aggies stretched the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Bowe led off with a single to left and one out later, moved to second on a groundout to third. Travis Bartek delivered a two-out single to left to score Bowe. After Bartek swiped second, Schindewolf drove an RBI single up the middle.
Austin Boggs drove in his second run of the game with his third single of the game in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 9-5.
Schindewolf scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to make the score 10-5 and bring home the game's final run.
Nicholson (1-0) earned the win, throwing four innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Another freshman, Blake Rampy, retired all three men he faced in the ninth, including two strikeouts, to end the game.
With the score tied at three in the bottom of the 10th inning of the afternoon's first game, Mavroulis singled to right to score Cliff Pennington and earn the Aggies the 4-3 win.
A&M-Corpus Christi scored first off A&M starter Justin Moore in the top of the third. Three consecutive singles by Casey Buaas, Jamie Landin and Mike Schlekewy loaded the bases. Jose Rodriguez lifted a flyball to right field, scoring Buass and giving the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies answered in the bottom of the third when Pennington hit his first homer of the season over the wall in right. The long ball was the second of Pennington's career and tied the game at one.
Mavroulis gave Texas A&M a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a lead off homer - his first of the season.
The Islanders regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Buaas singled and Landin followed with a double that pushed Buass to third. Schlekewy then singled to right to plate Buaas and Landin and make the score 3-2.
Texas A&M answered the call again in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a run to tie the game at three. Erik Schindewolf led off with a single and Islanders' starting pitcher Mike Hatfield walked Pennington and Patton to load the bases. Mavroulis drove in his second run of the game with a groundout to first.
Moore lasted six innings and allowed seven hits while striking out two. Austin Creps and Jason Meyer kept the Islanders at bay the rest of the way. Meyer earned the win and improved to 1-0.
Corpus Christi reliever Jorge Huerta (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing the three hits and one run in 1.2 innings of work.
The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to play Sam Houston State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Holleman Field.
