Jason Meyer struck out eight over seven-plus innings of work, but No. 10 Texas A&M could not solve Nebraska starter Zach Kroenke as the No. 19 Huskers defeated the Aggies, 4-1, in front of 4,748 fans at Haymarket Park.
Meyer (8-1) and Kroenke (7-1) dueled until the bottom of the seventh when Nebraska mounted a rally with two outs and nobody on.
John Boyer singled and Tyler Vaughn walked to put runners on first and second before Joe Simokaitis deposited a one-one pitch over the wall in left to give the Huskers a 4-1 lead. The homer was the first of the season for Simokaitis.
Kroenke pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out four.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 33-14 overall and to 9-9 in Big 12 play. Nebraska improved to 30-13 and 9-7 in the league.
Nebraska took the initial lead in the bottom of the second. Jake Mullinax started the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on a single to left by John Grose. A groundout by Jesse Boyer allowed Mullinax to score.
After Kroenke retired the first 13 men he faced, Cory Patton lined a single to center and moved to third on a double by John Infante. Andrew Baldwin lifted a sacrifice to center, allowing Patton to trot home and tie the game at one.
The second game of the series will be played on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. at Haymarket Park.
