The No. 22 Texas A&M softball team (32-21) fell to the Spartans of Michigan State, 5-1, on Thursday in first round action of the NCAA Regional at the Georgia Softball Stadium.
"I thought they (MSU) hit the ball well and did a good job hitting in the clutch," A&M Head Coach Jo Evans said. "They had six hits and we had five but they did a nice job with runners in scoring position. It's just a matter of stepping up in the clutch."
Freshman Sharonda McDonald scored the Aggies' lone run in the first after singling to left and stealing second, third and home.
Michigan State, the designated visitors, came out swinging in the first and put three runs across before adding one in the third and one in the fifth to take the victory. With the win, the Spartans advanced to the winner's bracket to play the winner of the Washington/Chattanooga game.
"We beat a very good Texas A&M team," MSU Head Coach Jacquie Joseph. "We were very concerned about Texas A&M. We capitalized on our opportunities. That was the difference."
Senior Jessica Kapchinski took the loss and fell to 17-9 on the season after throwing 4.1 innings and striking out four and walking two.
A bright spot for the Aggies was redshirt freshman Jill Weynand who threw 2.2 innings in relief and struck out three while retiring eight of the nine batters she faced.
The Aggies will play again tomorrow at 9 a.m. (CDT) against the loser of the Washington/Chattanooga game.
