Eight players from the No. 14 Texas A&M baseball team were named to the All-Big 12 team, the league office announced on Monday evening.
Outfielder Cory Patton and starting pitchers Jason Meyer and Zach Jackson were named to the first team. Catcher Craig Stinson and shortstop Cliff Pennington are second-team members, while second baseman Erik Schindewolf, third baseman Austin Boggs and first baseman Coby Mavroulis received honorable mention honors.
In addition, Meyer was named the Freshman Pitcher of the Year. After sitting out last year to rehab an elbow surgery, the Abilene, Texas, native burst onto the scene as a relief pitcher. After starting the season 4-0 and earning four saves, he was moved to the starting rotation at the beginning of the conference schedule. He finished the regular-season with a record of 8-2 and allowed just 74 hits while striking out 96 in 91.1 innings of work.
Jackson, the second Aggie ace, became the first A&M pitcher to record at least 100 strikeouts since the 1999 season. The junior transfer from Cranberry Township, Pa., fanned 110 opposing hitters in 104 innings. He opened the season by throwing a seven-inning no-hitter against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and carried a perfect game into the ninth inning against Nebraska by retiring the first 24 men he faced in the game. Jackson finished the regular season with a record of 10-5 to compliment an ERA of 3.55.
Patton slammed his way onto the All-Big 12 first team by hitting .341 with a team-high 11 home runs, 16 doubles and 64 RBI. Last season, the senior from Owasso, Okla., was a second-team selection. In 208 at bats Patton fanned just 20 times and he contributed defensively with eight outfield assists.
Pennington, earning his second straight second-team award, finished the regular season hitting .322 with four homers and 28 RBI. The sophomore from Corpus Christi, Texas, thrilled Big 12 baseball fans with numerous defensive highlights from the shortstop position. He also saw action on the mound in six games, earning two saves in 4.1 innings of work.
Stinson, a sophomore from Cranston, R.I., made his first appearance on the elite list of Big 12 baseballers as the second-team catcher. He hit .291 on the season, belted three homers and drove in 37 runs. Additionally, he threw out 36 percent of the runners that tried to steal while he was behind the dish.
Schindewolf made his second appearance on the All-Big 12 squad by hitting .314 with four home runs and 28 RBI despite missing a month of the season with a broken hand. The senior from Spring, Texas, earned second-team honors after his junior year. Schindewolf committed just three errors in 201 chances at second base.
Boggs, a native of Pflugerville, Texas, earned honorable mention honors as a true freshman after ending the regular season with an average of .336. He also hit five homers and drove in 46 runs. Boggs made only seven errors in 148 chances at the hot corner.
Mavroulis, a redshirt-sophomore from Abilene, Texas, finished the regular season with a team-leading .344 batting average. He also slugged four homers and had 45 RBI. He committed just one error in 494 tries at first for an astonishing .998 fielding percentage.
