Texas A&M sophomore Jill Weynand delivered a one-hit eight-strikeout performance to lead the No. 16 Aggie softball team (13-1) over Loyola Marymount (0-1), 8-0, in five innings at the Palm Springs Classic on Friday.
"It was a real team effort today," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Jill did a great job in the circle and we came out and were very aggressive in the first inning. This is a great way to start a tournament."
The Aggies got it started early when Jana James' (Mesquite, Texas) first-inning RBI-single scored Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) and was supported by back-to-back home runs by freshmen Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas) and Amanda Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas).
After working the count full in the third, Scarborough struck again when she drove her second home run of the day over the left field fence to give the Aggies a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, after James drove in McDonald for the sixth run, pinch hitter Lindsay Park (Arcadia, Calif.) hit a two-run home run to right scoring Laura Durham (Pearland, Texas) after she reached on pinch-hit single up the middle.
Lisa Gorzycki (Bryan, Texas) threw one perfect inning in relief for Weynand (Frisco, Texas) as she struck out the side in the fifth to close out the game.
The Aggies continue play in the Palm Springs Classic when they take on No. 12 Washington at 8 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
