Texas A&M pitcher Jill Weynand pitched the A&M softball team to a perfect game over Miami University (5-6) before the Aggies (18-2) defeated Utah (7-10), 3-0, in day one action of the St. Joseph Texas A&M Invitational at the Aggie Softball Complex on Friday.
Weynand was named the State Farm Player of the Day after throwing her first career perfect game in an 11-strikeout 3-0 victory over Miami University.
"These were two pitchers' wins today," A&M head coach Jo Evans commented. "Jill (Weynand) threw a magnificent game against Miami (Univ.) and Amanda (Scarborough) really competed in her effort against Utah. We got all the hits we needed we just didn't score a lot of runs so we really needed our pitchers to battle, and that is what they did."
Against Miami, Weynand received all the run support she would need in the first inning when Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) led off with her first triple of the season before scoring on a Jamie Hinshaw (Missouri City, Texas) double.
In her next at-bat of the day, McDonald reached on a single, moved to third on Hinshaw's second double of the day and scored on an Amanda Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) line drive single off the third baseman's glove.
In the top of the seventh, Scarborough gave Weynand an insurance run with a single to right that scored Jana James (Mesquite, Texas) from second after she reached on a double.
In game two, Hinshaw recorded her second RBI of the day on her third double with a shot over the left fielder's head that one-hopped the wall allowing Joy Davis (Austin, Texas) to score from second.
With a 1-0 lead in the sixth, Adrian Gregory (Livingston, Texas) gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead with a her fourth home run of the season scoring Scarborough after she reached on a double down the left field line.
Scarborough was 3-for-7 with a run and two RBI at the plate and improved to 9-0 on the season with a seven-strikeout shutout, her sixth of the season, of Utah.
