Texas A&M pitcher Megan Gibson tied the school single season home run record with her 18th of the season as the No. 1 Seed Texas A&M softball team (44-7) fell to the No. 4 Seed Baylor Bears (47-10), 11-4, in front of a national television Audience at the Big 12 Softball Tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium.
"Baylor came out aggressive at the plate and took advantage of our mistakes but I was glad to see our players fight back late in the game," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "We struggled at the plate early in the game but did a good job keeping our heads up and not giving in. I felt like we put a little pressure on them late but weren't able to put enough hits together."
Gibson was named the State Farm Player of the Game for the second day in a row as she went 2-for-3 wit two runs and two RBI.
Lisa Gorzycki (Bryan, Texas) was a bright spot in the game as she threw 3.1 solid innings in relief following up Jill Weynand (Frisco, Texas) and Gibson, who started the game.
After Baylor jumped out to an early 6-0 lead the Aggies scored one in the second when Gibson walked and moved to third before scoring on a Laura Durham (Pearland, Texas) sac fly to right field.
Baylor made it 10-0 with four in fourth before Gibson cut into the lead with her record-tying home run. Pinch runner Morgan Hebert (Peoria, Ariz.) made it 10-3 when she scored on an Adrian Gregory (Livingston, Texas) single to right field.
The Aggies added one in the fifth on an RBI double by Gibson that plated Jami Lobpries (Wharton, Texas) after she singled. Baylor answered with one in the sixth and kept the Aggies at bay the rest of the game and continuing through the winner's bracket.
