The No. 14-ranked Texas A&M women?™s basketball team hosts the Houston Jaguars in its final exhibition tilt of the season on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena.
The Houston Jaguars have gone 0-7 during their 2006 college tour including a 72-31 loss at rival Texas and a 108-54 blowout at Rutgers. A&M is one of five nationally-ranked teams to match up against one of the nation?™s premiere women?™s travel teams.
The Jaguars?™ exhibition slate includes contests at Xavier (Oct. 27), Texas Tech (Oct. 31), UTEP (Nov. 1), Texas (Nov. 2), No. 11 Rutgers (Nov. 4), Tulane (Nov. 4), No. 5 Tennessee (Nov. 5), No. 18 Baylor (Nov. 7), No. 8 Connecticut (Nov. 8), Sam Houston State (Nov. 9), Houston (Nov. 10) and Southern Mississippi (Dec. 28).
Former players Tamea Scales (2003-06) and Brandy Jones (1998-01) are two of the many former collegian standouts on the Jaguars?™ roster. Scales closed out her A&M career ranked ninth all-time in career blocks (55), 11th in career rebounds (555) and 12th in career steals (150). She tallied 744 career points and was named Most Valuable Player at UNLV?™s Duel in the Desert last season during her senior campaign.
Both Scales and Jones have been regulars in the starting lineup for the Jaguars. Jones put up 10 points versus Texas Tech, while Scales had a team-high eight points and five rebounds at Rutgers. Jones was a three-year starter for A&M and still ranks eighth all-time in career three-pointers made (278), seventh in career three-pointers attempted (278) and 10th in career assists (296).
The Aggies opened up exhibition play with a 77-57 win over Athletes In Action on Friday night. Sophomore Danielle Gant (Oklahoma City, Okla.) recorded a game-high 20 points, while the A&M defense held AIA to its lowest scoring production in four exhibition games played.
A&M returns all five starters from last year?™s 23-9 NCAA Tournament squad including junior All-American candidate Morenike Atunrase (Shreveport, La.) who scored 18 points on Friday night against Athletes In Action.
For the first time ever, women?™s exhibition games will be broadcast locally on WTAW-AM (1620) with Tom Turbiville (play-by-play) and Tap Bentz (color analyst) calling the action live from Reed Arena.
Ticket prices range from $11-$5 and can be purchased at The 12th Man Foundation Ticket Center at Kyle Field and at Reed Arena.
The Aggies officially commence the 2006-07 season on Friday, Nov. 10 versus 2006 NCAA Tournament participant and defending West Coast Conference tournament champion Pepperdine at 6 p.m. at Reed Arena. It will be the second of three doubleheaders scheduled this year with the Texas A&M men?™s basketball team. Fans can purchase season tickets by calling 1-888-99-AGGIE or online at AggieAthletics.com.
