The defending Big 12 Champion Texas A&M softball team (7-2) handed the Fordham Rams (0-3) an 7-0 loss Sunday in front of 568 fans in the finale of the St. Joseph Aggie Classic.
?I thought our kids handled the weather really well," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. ?They did a good job and kept their composure and didn?™t let that (the weather) get the best of them. It was nice for us to string some hits together. We really hit the ball well through our lineup and got good RBI production from the end of our order.?
The Aggies?™ three-run second inning started when shortstop Holly Ridley started the inning with a lead-off single to center. Rocky Spencer moved Ridley to second with a sac bunt and Ronda Smith singled to rightfield driving Ridley home. One batter later second baseman, Joy Davis launched her first career homerun over the scoreboard in leftfield; scoring Smith.
?It was nice to see JD (Davis) get out there and hit the ball so well,? continued Evans. ?She?™s really been working hard at that and it?™s nice to see her have success.?
Smith recorded her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly to rightfield that scored Ridley from third. Catcher Patti Wunderlich stepped up to the plate next for A&M and sent a shot deep over the left-centerfield fence to score Spencer and extend the Aggie lead 6-0 on her first career homerun.
?Patti Wunderlich had a nice approach at the plate in an RBI situation,? Evans said. She dug in there and got the longball.?
Jamie Hinshaw extended her hitting streak to five games in the bottom of the fifth on a double into the right-centerfield gap. Hinshaw then scored on a double by Megan Gibson to leftfield pushing the Ags?™ lead to seven.
Amanda Scarborough (2-2) recorded the complete game shutout giving up no runs on four hits, striking out nine while walking three.
?Scarborough went out and did a nice job today,? Evans concluded. ?She stayed in control of the hitters, got ahead and worked really well.?
Wunderlich was named State Farm Player of the Day going 1 for 2 with a walk, a homerun, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Aggies?™ next home game will be a doubleheader on Wednesday against the University of Houston. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. with the second game to follow at 7:00 p.m.
