No. 15 Texas A&M could manage only three hits on Saturday afternoon as Louisiana-Lafayette defeated the Aggies, 7-1, in second-day action of the UTSA Baseball Classic at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 13-5 while the Ragin?™ Cajuns improved to 7-4.
Lafayette pitcher Hunter Moody (2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run. He struck out two and walked three.
Lafayette scored three runs in the first inning and chased A&M starter Kyle Thebeau in the process. John McCarthy, Jamieson Parker, Josh Landry and Jonathon Lucroy each singled to start the inning. The singles by Landry and Lucroy scored runs and Parker scored on a wild pitch by Thebeau.
Thebeau (1-2) was lifted for Matt Ueckert after facing only the first four batters. Ueckert induced a double play and a flyout to get out of the inning with no further damage.
A&M capitalized on a couple of errors by Lafayette in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1. With two outs and nobody on, Blake Stouffer reached on a throwing error, stole second and advanced to third when the throw down to second sailed into center. Parker Dalton then delivered a clutch base hit up the middle to plate Stouffer.
The Ragin?™ Cajuns got the run right back in the top of the sixth with a solo homer by Lucroy.
Ueckert had a solid outing, tossing six innings. He allowed one run on three hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Lafayette added three runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
The Aggies will play tournament host Texas-San Antonio on Sunday at 3 p.m.
