Austin Creps did not allow an earned run in 7 2/3 innings, but Texas-San Antonio took advantage of a couple of Texas A&M miscues on Sunday afternoon as the No. 15 Aggies fell to UTSA, 4-2, in the UTSA Collegiate Classic at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
With one out and the bases loaded with Roadrunners in the bottom of the eight. Creps coaxed a come-backer and got an out on the force play at home. Mitch Ponza then hit a chopper up the middle that was gobbled up by shortstop Parker Dalton. Dalton?™s throw sailed wide, allowing the winning runs to score.
?We were ready to play today and we played hard and had a good outing by Austin Creps,? head coach Rob Childress said. ?Right now we are scuffling a bit after starting this year on a high note. Now we have to see how this team deals with a tough time. We have to stay within our team concept and come out and play hard tomorrow and end this streak.?
The fourth-straight loss for the Aggies dropped them to 13-6 on the season while UTSA improved to 11-7.
Creps (2-2) shouldered the loss, striking out six and walking two. UTSA starter Blake Brannon (3-4) earned the win by allowing two runs on eight hits in 8 2/3 innings of work.
The Aggies opened up an early lead in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Blake Stouffer doubled off the wall in right center, moved to third on a groundout to second by Anthony Vasquez and scored on a groundout to short by John Infante.
A&M pushed another run across in the top of the third to make the score 2-0. Dalton started the inning with a double to right and moved to third on a wild pitch by Brannon. Stouffer then lifted a sacrifice fly to right which allowed Dalton to trot home.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with two unearned off Creps in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first, third baseman Austin Boggs threw wildly to first on a groundout that would have ended the inning. Instead, Zach Etheridge delivered a two-RBI single up the middle.
A&M will play its final game in the tournament on Monday. First pitch against Illinois is set for 11 a.m.
