Blake Stouffer, Adam Hale, Austin Boggs and Ryan Hill each had three hits on Saturday night, but Texas A&M stranded 14 runners as Missouri defeated the Aggies, 6-5, in 12 innings at Olsen Field.
?We had plenty of opportunities and we just didn?™t get the big hit,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We found out a hard lesson tonight. You have to play hard for the entire game and it is tough to win in the Big 12. We have to find a way to come out tomorrow and get this thing turned in the right direction.?
With the loss, Texas A&M dropped to 14-8 overall and to 0-2 in Big 12 play. Missouri improved to 12-7 and 2-0 in the league. The Aggies will look to salvage the final game of the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
With one out in the top of the 12th, A&M reliever Jordan Chambless (1-2) walked Brock Bond. Kyle Thebeau replaced Chambless and after a passed ball allowed Bond to move to second, Thebeau was cited for a balk. The next pitch was wild and the run that scored because of it would prove to be the game winner.
Missouri reliever David Cales (1-0) retired the side in the bottom half of the 12th and struck out six in his four innings of work to earn the win.
A&M seemingly had the game in hand, leading 4-1 and heading to the top of the ninth. A four-run frame gave Missouri the lead, 5-4. Two of the four runs were unearned as a costly error forced the Aggie pitchers to record an additional out. Hunter Mense delivered a two-out RBI single to give the Tigers a one-run advantage.
An RBI single by Jose Salazar in the bottom of the ninth tied the game and loaded the bases with one out. Cales retired Craig Stinson with a strikeout and Josh Stinoson sharply grounded out to second to end the inning and the threat.
A&M took the lead with two runs off Mizzou starter Trevor Crow in the bottom of the first. Stouffer legged out an infield single to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single to center by Hale. Both runners advanced a station on a sacrifice bunt by John Infante and Boggs?™ infield single plated Stouffer. Craig Stinson then laced a double to left center, allowing Hale to score.
The Tigers cut the A&M lead in half with a run on the top of the fourth. A&M starter Austin Creps issued a one-out walk to Bond. Back-to-back singles Derek Chambers and Trevor Helms pushed Bond across to make the score 2-1.
Creps lasted six-complete innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out four and walked to.
