Chance Corgan struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one unearned run on Sunday afternoon, but Texas A&M could not avoid the series sweep as Missouri defeated the Aggies, 3-0, before 3,457 fans at Olsen Field.
Corgan (3-1) shouldered the loss despite setting career marks in innings pitched and strikeouts.
?I thought Chance had a great start, kept us in the game and had as good a stuff as I have seen him have,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We had the opportunity to win all three games this weekend but couldn?™t get the big hit. We are going to get this thing going offensively. We have showed signs by getting 16 hits in two of our last four games.?
The Aggies collected a season-high 16 hits in last Monday?™s game against Illinois and pounded 16 more in Saturday?™s loss to Missouri. For the weekend, A&M went 6-for-32 with runners in scoring position.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Aggies had a chance to tie the game. With runners on second and third and one out, Missouri closer Taylor Parker got two straight pop ups to end the threat.
Missouri got a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Jacob Priday blasted a two-run homer over the wall in left center. Going into the at bat, Priday was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on the afternoon.
Parker then retired the side in order in the ninth to record his second save of the weekend and third of the year.
The Tigers opened the scoring for the game, but it didn?™t happen until the top of the sixth. With one out, Brock Bond reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Austin Boggs and moved to third on a groundout by Derek Chambers. Trevor Helms then delivered a two-out RBI single to right to make the score 1-0.
Mizzou starter Rick Zagone (1-0) lasted 5 1/3 innings after pitching 6 1/3 innings in five appearances earlier this year. He struck out one, walked one and hit a man.
Texas A&M returns to action this Tuesday, March 21 when they travel to Houston to face the Cougars. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Cougar Field.
