Kyle Nicholson, Jason Meyer and Jordan Chambless combined for a shutout and Josh Stinson delivered a base-clearing double in the top of the ninth to propel No. 29 Texas A&M past No. 5 Florida, 4-0, before 3,915 fans at McKethan Stadium.
?It was a low-scoring and fast game tonight,? head coach Rob Childress said. ?Nicholson was great tonight, Meyer got six big outs and Chambless turned out the lights. We hit a lot of balls hard for four innings and then we couldn?™t get anything going until the ninth.?
With the win, the Aggies improved to 12-1 on the year while Florida dropped to 8-5.
Nicholson (3-0) earned the win as he tossed six innings and scattered five hits. He struck out three and walked only one.
Meyer pitched the seventh and eighth innings and retired all three men he faced. Chambless retired all three men he faced in the ninth to seal the victory.
The three scoreless innings tossed by the A&M bullpen ran the Aggie relievers?™ streak to 20-straight innings without a run crossing the plate.
Florida starter Bryan Ball (2-2) was the tough-luck loser. He lasted 8 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He retired 15-straight A&M hitters from the fourth through the ninth innings.
The Aggies took the early lead in the top of the first. With one out, Blake Stouffer walked, moved to third on a hit-and-run single to right by Jose Salazar and scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Austin Boggs.
Salazar finished the game with two of A&M?™s six hits on the night.
Game two between the Aggies and the Gators will be played Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. (EST) and 1 p.m. (CST) at McKethan Stadium.
