Texas A&M could not build on a three-run fourth inning on Sunday afternoon as No. 15 Oklahoma outscored the Aggies, 6-3, at Olsen Field.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 19-16 overall and to 3-9 in Big 12 play. The Sooners improved to 24-10 and 5-4, while winning two games of the three-game set.
?I was disappointed in our effort and attitude early in the game today,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We are playing at home in front of the best fans in college baseball and I though we would have more effort and intensity today with a chance to win the series.?
The Sooners took the lead in the top of the first with a run off A&M starter Matt Ueckert. Chuckie Caufield singled and stole second to start the inning. After a flyout, Kody Kaiser singled to plate Caufield and make the score 1-0.
OU added another run in the top of the fourth. Kaiser led off with a double to left and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Rohlinger. Kevin Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right to increase the Oklahoma?™s lead to 2-0.
A&M took the lead with a three-run fourth off OU starter P.J. Sandoval. Austin Boggs walked with one out and scored on a triple by Jake Vasquez. Kyle Colligan followed with a triple of his own and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Salazar.
Kyle Thebeau replaced Ueckert to start the fifth and the Sooners regained the lead courtesy of a two-out, two-run home run by Rohlinger, his sixth long ball of the season.
An RBI single by Russell Raley and an infield RBI single by Jackson Williams in the eighth stretched the OU lead to 6-3.
Thebeau (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of relief work.
Sandoval (5-1) lasted 8 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He retired 16 in a row from the fourth through the ninth innings and would have had a complete game had first baseman Kevin Smith not booted a ball with two outs in the ninth.
Will Savage, Saturday?™s winning pitcher, came on after a single by Colligan brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth. He retired the first man he faced to earn his sixth save of the season.
The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, when they host Texas State. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
