Texas A&M starting pitcher Matt Ueckert allowed one run in five-complete innings, but it was not enough as No. 7 Texas defeated the Aggies, 6-1, at Disch-Falk Field.
With the loss, A&M dropped to 21-26 overall and to 4-17 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 32-15 and 16-4.
A&M took the early lead in the top of the third with a run off Texas starter Riley Boening. Blake Stouffer singled to right with one out and moved to second on a balk. John Infante walked and Jose Salazar singled through the right side to plate Stouffer from second.
The Aggies had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth, but Adam Hale was stranded after leading off the inning with a triple.
The Longhorns tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Ueckert hit Hunter Harris, who moved to second on a balk and to third on a single to left by Brett Lewis. Nick Peoples singled in the infield to score Harris.
In the bottom of the sixth, Texas scored two runs without the benefit of a hit to take the lead, 3-1. Jordan Chambless walked the first man he faced and after a sacrifice bunt, he hit Chais Fuller. Anthony Vasquez replaced Chambless and walked Bradley Suttle to load the bases, before hitting Hunter Harris to force home the go-ahead run. Fuller then scored on a fielding error by shortstop Jose Salazar.
The Horns added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Preston Clark and a safety squeeze by Fuller and another in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Peoples.
Boenning (3-1) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in six-complete innings of work. Chambless (1-5) was saddled with the loss.
The Aggies return to action Tuesday when they host Sam Houston. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
