Ryan Hill scored the game-winner with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th on Saturday night to lead Texas A&M past Dallas Baptist, 4-3, at Olsen Field.
Keith Stein walked to start the 12th and Blake Stouffer was hit by a pitch. After Kyle Colligan successfully executed a sacrifice bunt, Jake Vasquez was intentionally walked to load the bases and bring Hill to the plate.
?I asked Ryan if he was going to be the guy to get the big hit when they walked Jake,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?He told me to put the books away because the game was about to be over. It is a good feeling when somebody tells you that.?
Hart Hering (1-1) earned the win, allowing just one hit and striking out four in a career-long 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
?Hart was outstanding tonight,? Childress said. ?It was gritty performance. He threw on no rest and had a long outing against a really good lineup.?
Randall Taylor (5-3) shouldered the loss.
The Aggies are off until next weekend when they host Kansas State in a three-game series at Olsen Field.
Texas A&M took the early lead courtesy of a Vasquez two-run homer in the bottom of the first. His fifth homer of the year also scored Colligan, who extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single.
The Aggies increased their lead to 3-0 in the second. Craig Stinson reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a single by John Infante, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Parker Dalton. Stinson later scored on a bunt single by Stein.
The Patriots scored in the top of the fourth to cut the A&M lead to 3-1. Cody Montgomery laced a two-out double to left and scored on a single by Matt Tucker.
DBU tied the game in the top of the seventh and chased A&M starter Kyle Nicholson in the process. Trevor Head doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Austin Krum. Krum stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Jeremy Goldschmelding. Montgomery?™s second double of the night put runners on second and third. Anthony Vasquez replaced Nicholson and fanned Drew Holder to end the inning and the threat.
Nicholson, lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Vasquez got himself into trouble in the top of the eighth, but Hering replaced him with runners on second and third and one out. He struck out the first two men he faced to get out of the jam.
DBU got out of a mess of its own in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. With runners on second and third and one out, Randall Taylor entered the game and struck out Keith Stein and coaxed Blake Stouffer to harmlessly ground out to end the inning.
The Patriots dodged another bullet in the bottom of the 10th with an excellent defensive play. Ryan Hill singled with two outs and tried to score from first on a double to right by Jose Salazar. He was gunned down at the plate on a relay throw by Tucker, the second baseman to extend the game.
The Aggies return to Big 12 action next weekend when they host Kansas State in a three game series at Olsen Field.
