Jose Salazar went three-for-five with a home run, a triple, a single, and four runs scored and Blake Stouffer and Kyle Colligan each drove in three runs Friday night to lead Texas A&M past Kansas State, 8-3, at Olsen Field.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 24-27 overall and to 5-17 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats dropped to 26-19-1 and 5-16-1 in the league.
?That was fun and I was proud of the way we competed,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?Our effort and attitude were good tonight on the field and in the dugout.?
A&M starter Jason Meyer (3-3) earned the win by allowing two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of mound work. He struck out two and walked one.
The Aggies scratched first in the bottom of the first off Wildcat starting pitcher Brad Hutt. Salazar tripled to center with one out and scored on a groundout by Colligan.
Colligan recorded two more RBI in the third to increase the A&M lead to 3-0. With runners on second and third and one out, Colligan laid down a perfect bunt which allowed Parker Dalton to score from third and Salazar to score all the way from second. Salazar and Dalton both reached on singles.
Joe Roundy belted his seventh homer of the season in the top of the fifth to cut the A&M lead to 3-1.
A&M answered with a homer of its own in the bottom of the inning when Stouffer went deep to straight-away center. It was his third of the season and was three-run shot which increased the Aggies?™ lead to 6-1.
Kansas State scored a run in the seventh to cut the Aggie lead to 6-2 and threatened to score more. With two out and the bases loaded with Wildcats, Hart Hering entered the game to replace Meyer and fanned the first man he faced to end the inning and threat.
A&M answered again in the bottom of the seventh. John Infante delivered a two-out single to center to score Jake Vasquez, who walked a stole second.
Salazar hit his first dinger of the year in the bottom of the eighth to give the Aggies an 8-2 lead.
Hering struck out three and allowed just one hit in his 1 1/3 innings of relief work and Kyle Thebeau allowed one run on three hits in the ninth to end the game.
Hutt (6-4) shouldered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out one and walked one.
