The five-time national champion Texas A&M equestrian team will hold a mandatory informational meeting regarding walk-on tryouts on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Burkhart Auditorium in the northwest corner of Kyle Field.
The Texas A&M equestrian team usually carries a roster of 60-70 riders with 30-35 competing in either the English or western discipline.
Tryouts will be somewhat different this fall as the team has elected to no longer compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) format. In the IHSA format, beginner level riders were as important to the success of the team as its top riders. However, the Aggies have elected to switch to a varsity-only style of competition that emphasizes the success of only a team?™s top riders.
The team will be looking for primarily advanced riders that can excel in western horsemanship and reining as well as English equitation on the flat and over fences.
Those interested in trying out for the A&M equestrian team need to be prepared to fill out extensive paperwork regarding their riding and show experience. Proof of insurance and fall class schedules are also mandatory at the Sept. 5 meeting.
Riding tryouts will follow on Sept. 7-8 at N.W. ?'Dick?™ Freeman Arena, the Aggies?™ home competition site in College Station.
