Oct 24, 2007 | Men's Tennis
October 24, 2007
More than 100 former and current Texas A&M men?™s and women?™s tennis players and supporters will take part in Tennis Reunion Weekend on Oct. 26-28 in College Station, Texas.
Former greats such as four-time All-American Shuon Madden (?™01), All-American Lynn Staley Guillo (?™92), All-American Kim Labuschagne Barry (?™88) and ITA Hall of Famer and former men?™s tennis coach David Kent (1979-96) are among the list of attendees. Current A&M head coaches Steve Denton and Bobby Kleinecke also welcome back recent graduates and All-Big 12 Conference standouts in Mohamed Dakki (?™07), Khaled El Dorry (?™04), Sarah Foster (?™07), Brett Joelson (?™06), Anna Lubinsky (?™07), John Nallon (?™07) and Bryan Wooten (?™06).
Put on by the Texas A&M Lettermen?™s Association, the reunion weekend will include Saturday?™s football game against Kansas, a kickoff reception, game day barbecue, competitive matches between former and current student-athletes at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and a cocktail party and dinner at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
Both the men?™s and women?™s tennis programs maintain a storied tradition at A&M along with a dominating presence in the Big 12 and old Southwest Conference. The men have made 22 NCAA Team Championship appearances and boast eight All-Americans since 1921, while the women have made 13 NCAA Team Championship appearances and produced four All-Americans since 1980.
In addition to the weekend?™s festivities, the College of Education and Human Development will dedicate 18 instructional tennis courts in honor of the late Omar Smith on Friday, Oct. 26 at noon. A dedicated coach, educator and longtime faculty member at the university, Smith (1960-74) is the second all-time winningest coach in school history with 275 career victories. He guided A&M to 13 winning seasons, two Southwest Conference doubles titles, a No. 10 national ranking and an undefeated home record against archrival Texas. The Omar Smith Instructional Tennis Courts will enable the university to teach tennis classes to 2,000 students each year and to host numerous local, state and national tennis tournaments.
The Lettermen?™s Association, founded in 1974, is one of the most visible and well-respected organizations in the University System, with active members spanning nearly 70 class years and representing all intercollegiate sports.
