BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Head men's tennis coach Steve Denton and Texas A&M University agreed to a new contract that runs through the 2030 season, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced on Thursday.
"We are excited to extend Steve Denton's contract and continue to watch our men's tennis program excel and compete at a high level," Alberts said. "Coach Denton and his staff demonstrate incredible leadership, are dedicated to student-athlete development and are committed to Texas A&M's values, which makes each of them integral to our continued success as we compete for conference and national championships."
Denton has been at the helm of the Texas A&M program for 20 seasons, compiling a 375-174 overall record to become the winningest coach in school history. The Aggies have garnered a trio of SEC Regular Season Championships and a pair of SEC Tournament Championships under Denton's guidance. The Maroon & White have advanced to the NCAA Tournament every season since Denton's arrival in 2006.
"It is with great appreciation to our interim President Tommy Williams, Athletics Director Trev Alberts and my sports supervisor, Susan Tatum, as well as the Board of Regents at Texas A&M to entrust me to lead our tennis program in the future," Denton said. "I am also grateful to have great coaches like Kevin O'Shea and Barnaby Smith alongside of me to lead our young men. The recent success our program has accomplished on the world stage has the coaching staff more motivated than it's ever been. We are committed to developing the next generation of players and helping them achieve their goals with a championship culture. It is an exciting time to be a part of Aggie tennis, and I know our 12th Man will come out in full force to watch some great tennis this spring."
Denton earned back-to-back SEC Coach of the Year accolades in 2014 and 2015 after directing the Aggies to consecutive SEC Tournament Championships. Over the past 19 seasons, Denton tallied a 125-56 conference record. Under his leadership, A&M has produced 15 singles and 13 doubles All-Americans.
Texas A&M is represented in the professional ranks by dozens of players that developed under Denton's tutelage, including U.S. Olympian and former world No. 1 doubles player Austin Krajicek and current ATP top 40 singles players Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech, who recently met in the final of the Shanghai Masters tournament.
