Kyle Thebeau struck out eight and Jordan Chambless fanned six to lead Texas A&M to a 3-2 win over Houston in second-day action of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park on Saturday night.

?I am proud of the way we competed tonight,? head coach Rob Childress said. ?Houston has a good team and we really had to earn this win. We had a couple of big-time pitching performances tonight and that and defense was the difference.?

With the win, A&M improved to 2-1 while Houston dropped to 2-1. The Aggies conclude play in the Houston College Classic on Sunday against No. 1 Rice. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Minute Maid Park.

Thebeau was solid in his 5 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing just a solo home run to Felix Fanaselle in the top of the first. He allowed six hits and walked one.

Thebeau ran into trouble in the sixth and was replaced by freshman lefty Michael Heard with runners on second a third and one out. Heard coaxed Josh Stirneman to ground out to third, before Chambless entered and struck out Luis Flores to end the inning and keep the game tied at one each.

In the bottom of the sixth, Houston reliever John Touchton retired the first two men he faced before Darby Brown and Josh Stinson singled. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, freshman second baseman Brodie Greene singled to right to put the Aggies on top 3-1.

?Brodie is a good athlete and came up with a big hit,? Childress said. ?We had nothing going in the inning and we found a way to make something happen with two outs and nobody on.?

Chambless (1-0) was in control the rest of the way, allowing just one hit ?- a solo home run to Jimmy Cesario in the top of the eight. Chambless now has 11 strikeouts in five innings of work.
