Luke Anders went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and the Aggies survived a ninth-inning rally as No. 28 Texas A&M survived Texas-Pan American, 7-4, on a chilly Friday afternoon at Olsen Field.
With two runs already across in the top of the ninth and the bases loaded, Gary Campfield replaced A&M reliever Shane Minks and coaxed Lyndon Bartosh to ground into a game-ending double play.
Campfield earned the save in his first outing as an Aggie and needed just one batter to record two outs.
?We got some big hits when we needed them,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?It was nice to see Campfield come in and get a big double play to end the game. He will grow from being in that pressure situation. The last three outs are always the hardest ones to get.?
With the win, the Aggies improved to 5-1 while UT-Pan American dropped to 4-5. The three-game series will resume tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Olsen Field.
The Broncs took the lead in the top of the third when Osiel Flores delivered a two-out RBI single to center. A fielding error earlier in the inning caused the run to be unearned.
A&M took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. All the damage was done with two outs. With nobody on, Anders singled and Kyle Colligan doubled. Brian Ruggiano then laced a double over the center fielder, Leighton Autry, to plate two runs.
UTPA tied the game in the top of the fifth with their second unearned run of the game. Roly Gonzalez moved from first to third on a failed pick-off attempt at first and scored on a ground out by Flores.
Another clutch two-out hit ?- this time by Craig Stinson ?- scored Brandon Hicks to earn the Aggies a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
A three-run sixth for the Aggies gave them a four-run lead. Feltner and Darby Brown delivered RBI singles and Hicks drove in a run with a double.
Ruggiano drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to increase the A&M lead to 7-2.
A&M starter Jason Meyer (2-0) lasted six-complete innings, allowing two runs ?- both unearned ?- on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Broncs starter Cody Crisper (0-2) shouldered the loss. A&M touched Crisper for three runs on seven hits in five-complete innings.
Aggie reliever Kyle Nicholson pitched two scoreless innings and freshman Shane Minks saw his first collegiate action in the ninth.
