Blake Stouffer and Craig Stinson combined to go 10-for-11 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 11 RBI and six runs scored to lead the No. 24 Texas A&M baseball team past Jacksonville State, 15-5, Friday night at Olsen Field.
Stouffer hit for the cycle, going 5-for-5 with six RBI and Stinson went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a homer and five RBI.
The A&M offense recorded season highs with 18 hits and 15 runs. Eight of the Aggies?™ 15 hits went for extra bases and in the last five games the A&M offense has tallied 61 hits.
?We had a great night offensively,? Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We scored early and put the pressure on them from the start. Stouffer and Stinson were fun to watch tonight. Defensively, we were able to get out of a couple jams early that would have let them get right back into the game.?
The win runs the Aggies?™ winning streak to eight games and their overall record in now 9-1. Jacksonville State dropped to 2-2. The second game of the three-game series is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Olsen Field.
Stinson gave the Aggies an early lift as he blasted a three-run home run over the wall in left center. It was his second homer of the year and it also plated Brandon Hicks, who doubled to lead off the inning, and Stouffer, who drew a walk.
A&M pushed three more runs across in the second. Ruggiano doubled and moved to third when Parker Dalton reached on a throwing error. With one out, Dalton and Ruggiano executed a double steal, before Ben Feltner reached on a bunt single. Dalton scored and Feltner moved to second on a balk. Feltner then scored all the way from second on an infield single by Blake Stouffer to make the score 6-0.
The Gamecocks cut the A&M lead to 6-2 in the top of the third. A&M starter Jason Meyer issued back-to-back one-out walks to Josh Sanders and Bert Smith. Nick Clecker singled to center to plate Sanders, and Smith scored on an errant throw back into the infield by center fielder Kyle Colligan.
For the third time in four innings, A&M put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Stouffer hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in left center that also scored Hicks. Ruggiano delivered a two-out RBI single to score Stinson and make the score 9-2.
Gamecocks?™ starting pitcher Donovan Hand (0-2) did not make it out of the fourth inning. He allowed nine runs ?- eight earned ?- on eight hits, while walking four and striking out two.
After a walk, two hit batters and a sacrifice fly by Garrett Bass in the fifth, Scott Migl replaced A&M starter Jason Meyer. Migl got out of the jam with no further damage when he coaxed Jake Ball to ground into a fielder?™s choice.
Meyer struggled with his command all night, walking five and hitting four batters. He allowed three runs ?- two earned ?- in 4 2/3 innings on the mound.
Back-to-back two-out doubles by Stouffer and Stinson in the fifth increased the A&M lead to 10-3.
Migl (2-0) allowed a two-out RBI single to Clay Whittemore in the seventh and reliever Shane Minks allowed a RBI groundout in the eight to account for the other two JSU runs.
Stouffer drove in three more with a triple in the seventh and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Bert Smith. Stinson finished off the A&M scoring in the eighth with a RBI single to right.
