Kyle Nicholson threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and Craig Stinson went 3-for-4 with two doubles as No. 24 Texas A&M rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Jacksonville State, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field.
Nicholson (3-1) allowed just three hits, did not walk a man and struck out six. He faced two men over the minimum.
The Aggies improved their win streak to nine games and overall record to 10-1. The Gamecocks dropped to 2-3. A&M will try for the series sweep Sunday afternoon. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
?This may be our biggest win of the year,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?I was proud that we did not panic when we were down 4-0. Nicholson came in and calmed things down for us and we were able to take advantage of some situations offensively.?
A&M starter Kyle Thebeau escaped a huge jam in the top of the first. After a pair of hits and a walk loaded the bases, Thebeau struck out Eric Beck and coaxed Clay Whittemore to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Jacksonville State made Thebeau pay for his wildness in the second. Two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases, before Nick Clecker drove in two runs with a single and Brian Piazza followed with a two-out single to score a run and make the score 3-0.
Thebeau did not get out of the third and was replaced by Nicholson with runners on second and third and one out. Nicholson got two straight groundouts, but the first one by Andrew Edge scored a run and increased the JSU lead to 4-0.
The Aggies were finally able to get to Gamecocks?™ starter Tony Drinkard for a pair or runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2. Stinson doubled with one out, but was unable to advance to third on Kyle Colligan?™s infield single. Stinson then scored and Colligan moved to third on a double to left center by Josey Parker. Colligan scored one batter later on a RBI groundout by Spencer Jackson.
A&M scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four. Brandon Hicks singled and moved to third when Ben Feltner reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. Hicks scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Stouffer and Feltner moved to third on a wind-aided double to center by Stinson. Feltner then scored on a sacrifice fly by Colligan.
Clark Jinks replaced Drinkard to start the bottom of the sixth and the Aggies welcomed him to the game by scoring two runs to take their first lead of the game, 6-4. Luke Anders singled and Darby Brown walked. Parker Dalton then laid down a bunt that was fielded by Jinks and thrown wildly to third, allowing Anders to score and Brown and Dalton to both moved into scoring position. Anders later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hicks.
