No. 19 Texas A&M survived a ninth-inning rally by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night to defeat the Islanders, 8-7, at Olsen Field.
The Aggies led by four runs heading to the top of the ninth, but the Isalnders would not go quietly. A two-out throwing error by A&M shortstop Brandon Hicks allowed a run to score and extended the inning. Bryan Gerondale laced a two-RBI single to get TAMU-CC to within one run. A&M reliever Kyle Thebeau entered the game with the bases loaded and recorded a strikeout of Chris Widner to end the game and record his first save of the season.
With the win, the Aggies improved their win streak to 11 games and their overall record to 12-1. It is the longest win streak since A&M won 15 in a row in 1995. The Islanders dropped to 9-5.
?We will take them anyway we can get them,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?It was good to see Thebeau come in and get a big strikeout in a huge situation. They are a good hitting team with a good approach at the plate, and if you give them extra outs they will make you pay.?
After getting just one hit in the first four frames off TAMU-CC starter Matt Wilson, the Aggies exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Anders delivered an RBI single, pinch hitter Daman Aaron drove in a run with a sharp single to right and Ben Feltner ripped a double to plate the third run of the inning. Blake Stouffer then belted his second home run of the year, a three-run shot over the wall in right center.
A&M starter Scott Migl held the Islanders scoreless through five, but ran into trouble in the sixth. After allowing back-to-back singles to start the inning, Jordan Chambless came in to relieve Migl.
Gerondale, the first man Chambless faced, blooped a single to right to load the bases. Jason Graham then grounded into a fielder?™s choice to score a run. After Chambless struck out Widner for the second out of the inning, Josh Plumaj doubled to left center to plate two more runs and make the score 6-3. Plumaj was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
The Aggies responded with a run in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to four runs. Josh Stinson singled and with two outs and he scored all the way from first on a double to left center by Hicks.
Anders collected his second RBI of the game with a groundout in the bottom of the seventh to run the A&M lead to 8-3.
TAMU-CC added a run off reliever Kiel Renfro in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-4.
Migl (3-0) threw five-plus innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out three and did not walk a man.
Wilson (2-2) allowed six runs ?- five earned ?- on six hits in five-complete innings of work. He struck out six Aggies and walked three.
The Aggies return to action this weekend when they host the 2007 Domino?™s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic Friday through Monday. A&M opens the tourney Friday against defending national champion Oregon State at 6:30 p.m. Saint Louis and New Mexico play the first game of the tournament at 12:30 p.m.
