For the second day in a row, No. 15 Oklahoma State scored in the top of the ninth to defeat No. 14 Texas A&M, 12-11, at Olsen Field.
Ty Wright belted a two-run home run over the wall in left center, to put the Cowboys on top. Jordy Mercer (1-0), who threw four scoreless innings in relief, retired the side in order in the ninth.
?There were a lot of things we did right today,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We got some big hits, made some big plays, and threw big pitches at times. But the things we did wrong outweighed the good things and that is why we lost.?
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 32-10 overall and remained in fourth place with a 9-8 mark in the Big 12. The Cowboys kept a hold on second place in the league, improving to 31-10 and 10-5.
OSU took the early lead in the top of the first with three unearned runs off A&M starter Scott Migl. Wright reached on an error by third baseman Brodie Greene and Corey Brown walked. With two outs, Matt Mangini doubled to plate two runs and scored one hitter later on a double by Rebel Ridling.
The Aggies answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off OSU starter Josh Fritsche to tie the game. Brandon Hicks and Ben Feltner singled and then executed a double steal before Blake Stouffer drove them both home with a double. Stouffer scored on a single to left by Luke Anders. After the Anders single, Fritsche was lifted in favor of Robbie Weinhardt.
OSU regained the lead in the top of the second when Ryan Flavell hit his second home run of the year. With two outs, back-to-back doubles by Wright and Brown made the score 5-3.
Hicks appeared to have tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. Brian Ruggiano, who was pinch running for Greene after he left the game because of an injury suffered from being hit by a pitch, went back to the base to tag up when he thought left fielder Wright had caught the ball. Hicks passed Ruggiano and was ruled out and credited with a single and an RBI.
Migl got into more trouble in the third when a one-out walk to Ridling and a double by Jordy Mercer put runners on second and third. Jason Meyer replaced Migl and fanned Kendall Horner and Flavell to end the inning and the threat.
Brown hit his 16th home run of the year in the top of the fourth to increase the Cowboys?™ lead to 6-4.
A&M had an answer again and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Hicks and Feltner.
OSU regained the lead again in the top of the fifth with a RBI double by Kendall Horner. Gary Campfield then took the mound and promptly balked Horner to third. After a groundout to a drawn-in infield and a strikeout, Campfield uncorked a wild pitch to allow Horner to score and make the score 8-6.
A&M took its first lead of the game with a four spot in the bottom of the fifth off four different Cowboy pitchers. Parker Dalton plated two runs with a bases-loaded single and Feltner tripled to right center with outs to score two more runs.
Luke Anders started the bottom of the sixth with his eighth homer of the year to increase the A&M lead to 11-8.
The Cowboys cut the lead to one run in the top of the eighth with a two-RBI single Mercer.
Thebeau (2-4) allowed the ninth-inning homer to Wright and was tagged with the loss.
The Aggies return to action Tuesday when they host Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m.
