David Newmann tied a season-high with nine strikeouts over seven-complete innings to lead No. 11 Texas A&M past Le Moyne, 7-2, in first-day action of the College Station Regional at Olsen Field.
Newmann (11-1) allowed just one unearned run on six hits and increased his season strikeout total to 98.
Texas A&M swiped eight bases to increase its season total to 147, eclipsing the old Big 12 single-season record of 146 set by Baylor in 1999 and Texas Tech in 1998.
With the win, A&M improved to 45-16, while the Dolphins dropped to 34-18. A&M plays Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday at 7 p.m. in the winner's bracket and at 1 p.m., Le Moyne and Ohio State square off in an elimination game.
Craig Stinson gave the Aggies the early lead with a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the first that scored Ben Feltner and Blake Stouffer.
A three-run fourth stretched the A&M lead to 5-0. With two outs, Parker Dalton singled to left to drive in Kyle Colligan, and Dane Carter immediately followed with a two-RBI single to center.
Le Moyne scratched in the top of the fifth with an unearned run to cut the A&M lead to 5-1. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sean Paino easily scored when Newmann threw wildly to second in a pickoff attempt.
After the Dolphins scored their second unearned run of the evening in the top of the eight to cut the lead to 5-2, the Aggies answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.
Craig Stinson led the way offensively for A&M, collecting two hits, including a triple a two RBI. He has 13 multiple-hit games in the last 17 contests.
Travis Starling threw the final two innings to nail down the A&M win.
Le Moyne starter Bobby Blevins (9-3) battled for 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three.
TEXAS A&M COACH ROB CHILDRESS: "I'm proud of our team. For so many of our guys on the team, probably 95 percent of them, they've never been in this type of an environment. It is postseason, and you are playing for keeps. I felt like (pitcher) David Newmann got us off to a great start. He allowed us to score first and went out and answered with a zero. If not for some big two-out hits early in the game, it would be a different ballgame. Craig (Stinson) got a big two-out RBI. Parker Dalton, Dane Carter got some big two-out RBIs in the fourth inning to give us a little bit of a cushion. David had a quality start and got us through seven (innings) and gave us a chance to have the lead. Travis Starling came in and was able to finish it off. I was proud of the way we played today.
"I thought (Le Moyne starting pitcher) Bobby Blevins did an outstanding job, as good as we've seen all year long. He could be a starter in the Big 12, there is no doubt about it. He attacked the strike zone with an outstanding fastball and just enough change-up to keep us honest. I'm proud of the way they competed. Le Moyne is a very good team, and they deserve to be here.
TEXAS A&M PITCHER DAVID NEWMANN: "The Aggie fans are unbelievable. We were talking about in the dugout. Seeing them singing the War Hymn, it just gave me goose bumps. I felt pretty good tonight. I was hitting my spots, just keeping the ball down and getting by them."
TEXAS A&M CATCHER CRAIG STINSON: (on A&M setting the Big 12 record for stolen bases) "That's been our game all year, just stealing bases and putting that full-court pressure on the other team. We put a lot of pressure on them tonight, especially in the seventh inning when we finally put them away."
LE MOYNE HEAD COACH STEVE OWENS: "It was a fun ballgame. We got behind the eight-ball with some two-out basehits. A&M got their first five runs that way. They did a good job of 'clutching up' in key situations. When they got people in scoring position, they got them home. In these type of game you always want to 'play from ahead.' I don't know how many men we left on base, but I know it was a bunch. We knew (A&M starter David Newmann) would go to his breaking ball in tough situations, and he did. But we failed in a couple of those situations. He's a good pitcher. We scratched and clawed to get back into the game, but it didn't happen."
LE MOYNE SHORTSTOP ANDY PARRINO: (On A&M starter David Newmann) "Newmann is a good pitcher. The thing I noticed about him is he doesn't fool around. He comes right after you and makes you put the ball in play."
LE MOYNE PITCHER BOBBY BLEVINS: (On giving up two runs in first inning) "That's not the way you want to start a game. I left some pitches up in the zone and they took advantage of those mistakes. After that I started to trust my fastball more and was able to get into a groove. This was a great atmosphere for a baseball."
