The No. 21 Texas A&M men?™s tennis team picked up its second Big 12 Conference victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Nebraska Friday night at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
Snow flurries and a wind chill of 20 degrees forced play indoors as the Aggies (11-9, 2-3) adjusted to the faster conditions and produced their second road win of the season against the Huskers (9-12, 0-3). The victory snapped a three-match skid as A&M took advantage of the doubles point in the early going for the third-straight match.
The No. 48-ranked doubles team of junior Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) raised their record to an undefeated 8-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play with an 8-3 victory over Nebraska?™s Renato Melo and Tobias Schneider at the No. 1 line. Senior Mike Beatty (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) also gave A&M a boost with an 8-5 result over Nebraska?™s Calin Paar and Francois Van Impe at No. 2 to improve their mark to 3-0.
The No. 3 combination of senior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas) and sophomore Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) closed the doubles point out with an 8-6 victory over Nebraska?™s David Bendheim and Hendrik Stahmer.
A&M went on to capture four of six singles matches including two that were decided by tiebreakers in each set. Freshman Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) got past Nebraska?™s Karl Jones, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), to clinch the match for the Aggies at the No. 6 line. Other Aggie wins came courtesy of Krajicek who improved to 4-0 at the No. 3 line against Big 12 competition followed by Bain in straight sets at No. 5 and Chirico in three sets at No. 4.
?It was a good solid win for us,? Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. ?It is beginning to click for us in doubles and it really helped our mentality leading into singles. We did a much better job in singles and responded well there today. It was a good result for us, especially playing on the road and indoors. It is usually not our forte this season, but we were able to avenge last year?™s loss to Nebraska. It (the win) gives us a boost to our confidence, especially with a really good team in Texas next week.?
A&M will close out the regular season at fourth-ranked Texas (18-3, 4-0) in a State Farm Lone Star Showdown match between the two in-state rivals on Saturday, April 19 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. First serve between the Aggies and Longhorns is scheduled for 4 p.m.
