College Station - Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry announced the hiring of Alleyne Francique to the Aggie track and field coaching staff.
Francique has served as a volunteer assistant coach with the program for the past four years. A 2003 graduate of LSU, Francique competed for Henry while a member of the LSU track and field team.
A six-time All-American with the Tigers, Francique captured the NCAA Indoor 400 title in 2002 and was part of the 4 x 400 relay team that claimed an NCAA Indoor title the same season. In winning the 2002 indoor SEC title Francique established a then collegiate record of 45.35 seconds.
In international competition on the professional level, Francique claimed two World Indoor Championships in the 400 (2004 Budapest, 2006 Moscow). He became only the second person to successfully defend his World Indoor title in the 400.
In the 2004 Olympic Games, held in Athens, Greece, Francique finished fourth in the 400 final. He also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, carrying the Grenada flag for a second time during the Opening Ceremony. Francique world ranked No. 1 in the IAAF rankings for the 2004 season, when he set a national record of 44.47.
"As a professional athlete I have always been aware that the time would come for me to begin another chapter of my life," Francique said. "That time has come and I look forward to the exciting challenges that lay ahead.
"To be able to remain associated with Coach Henry for this period of time and now to be part of his coaching staff is a great honor."
Francique, a native of St. Andrew's, Grenada, earned his degree in general studies from LSU in 2003. He is currently the Ambassador of Sport for Grenada, a position he has held since 2004.
