The Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team notched its second victory in as many days with a solid 171-129 victory over Missouri on Saturday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
Saturday's dual meet victory over the Tigers came on the heels of their team victory at the Big 12 Relays on Friday, and culminated a strong opening weekend of action for the Aggies.
"It was a great way to start the season," Aggie head coach Steve Bultman said of his team's two victories. "The Big 12 Relays were really tough, and then we had to come back and compete the next day. I was pleased with the way we took care of business. It's tough to swim two days in a row. We had some solid swims and some that could have been better, but we did what we came to do. We'll learn from our mistakes, move forward and make corrections."
The Aggies won 10 of 16 total events with one relay victory, one diving win and eight individual swimming victories. The Aggies went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 IM, and took the top two spots in the 100 free, 200 fly and 100 back.
For the second day in a row, senior Julia Wilkinson was dominant with three individual victories and swam the opening backstroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay. Wilkinson, who missed the 2008-09 season due to injury, won the 100 back (54.96), the 100 free (50.19) and the 200 IM (2:03.55).
Fellow senior Alia Atkinson turned in a pair of victories and swam the breaststroke leg on the medley relay. Atkinson swept the breaststroke races with times of 1:03.18 in the 100 breast and 2:16.92 in the 200 breast.
True freshman Maureen McLaine won a pair of distance freestyle races with victories in the 500 (4:54.09) and 1,000 (10:01.10) freestyles. Junior diver Jaele Patrick won the one-meter springboard with a score of 282.08, and sophomore Rita Medrano took gold in the 200 fly in 2:00.24. Also swimming legs on the winning 200-yard medley relay, which hit the wall in 1:42.66, were freshman Kendra Chernoff (fly leg) and junior Maria Sommer (free).
