HOUSTON - Sophomore Rhi Kliesing threw her third shutout as the No. 19 Texas A&M softball team blanked McNeese State, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Houston Invitational.
The Aggies improved to 8-6 with two RBI singles from junior Alex Reynolds and an RBI double from senior Erin Glasco. Kliesing fanned nine and gave up just two hits to earn her fifth victory in the circle. The Cowgirls fell to 3-13.
The game got off to a slow start after a scoreless first inning. Rain and a cool front came over the Cougar Softball Stadium delaying the game in the top of the second inning for just over 30 minutes.
Following a scoreless second frame, junior Macie Morrow drew a walk, senior Holly Ridley singled and Glasco was hit by the pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Reynolds muscled a hit up the middle to plate Morrow from third and get the Aggies out to a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ridley laced a one-out single through the left side and Glasco followed with a double to the left-center fence that scored Ridley from first. With two down, Reynolds dropped a single into shallow right field and pinch runner Andrea Tovar crossed the plate to put A&M up 3-0.
Reynolds and Ridley went 2-for-2, while Glasco hit .500. Only one Cowgirl moved into scoring position the entire game.
The Aggies take on No. 18 Houston at approximately 6:30 p.m. this evening. The Cougars defeated McNeese State, 8-6, yesterday and lost to Illinois, 12-11, in eight innings.
