BOCA RATON, Fla. - Texas A&M senior Holly Ridley laced the game-winning hit and freshman Rebecca Arbino struck out nine and to lead the No. 18 Aggies to a 1-0 shutout of Bethune-Cookman in their first game of the FAU Parents' Weekend Classic.
Ridley's line-drive triple down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh was just the third hit of the game for A&M, but proved to be the most important as it scored freshman Kelsea Orsak from first to push the Aggies to victory.
Arbino earned her third shutout in her last three starts and gave up just three hits while walking none. The Clovis, Calif., native improved to 7-4 as A&M moved to 19-9 and the Wildcats fell to 6-19.
After giving up a lead-off single to Ashton Hinds in the top of the first, Arbino and the Aggie defense retired 17 straight batters through five innings before Hinds managed just the second hit of the game in the sixth inning. Arbino struck out the side in the top of the third.
The Aggies were retired in order through five frames as B-CU pitcher Briana Leverett tallied five K's.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, junior Bailey Schroeder lined the first A&M hit to left field and stretched it out into a double, but dislocated her right shoulder sliding face-first into second. Sophomore Andrea Tovar replaced Schroeder, but the Aggies were unable to push the run across in the inning.
Orsak led off the bottom half of the seventh with a bunt single, before Ridley went with an outside pitch for the game-winner.
Hits were even at three apiece and neither pitcher allowed a walk in the game.
The Aggies play their second contest of the day at the FAU Parents' Weekend Classic against host school Florida Atlantic at approximately 7 p.m. For live stats and live audio, stay logged on to AggieAthletics.com.
