COLLEGE STATION, Texas - New Mexico used a 17-hit attack and strong relief pitching to lift the Lobos to a 10-6 win over No. 3 Texas A&M Tuesday evening before 3,404 fans at Olsen Field.
The Aggies fell to 13-6 with the loss, while UNM won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 17-3.
After falling behind 8-3 in the sixth, A&M fought back for the second game in a row to pull within two. The Aggies brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to cash in. New Mexico--who entered the evening hitting .402 and averaging 12 runs and 15 hits a game--added two insurance runs in the ninth to close out the evening.
The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Kyle Colligan was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third base and came home on an RBI single by Brodie Greene.
Brian Cavazos-Galvez tied the game for the Lobos in the next half inning with an RBI double down the left field line.
New Mexico would take its first lead of the evening in the fourth courtesy an RBI single to center by Kevin Atkinson.
Following a lead walk in the Aggie half of the inning to Nick Anders, Joe Patterson greeted the reliever, Rudy Jaramillo, with a run-scoring groundout to second that put A&M back on top at 3-2.
New Mexico once again answered the Aggies, as the Lobos sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth and scored five runs on five hits to take a 7-3 lead. The big blow in the inning was a two-run triple to right field by Rafael Neda.
Dane Hamilton extended the lead to 8-3 with a one-out RBI single to left center in the sixth.
A&M managed just one hit in the seventh, but took advantage of a hit batsmen and two walks by UNM pitching to score three times. With the bases loaded and two outs, a wild pitch brought Patterson home from third base. Then, Kyle Colligan and pulling A&M back within two at 8-6.
It would be as close as the Aggies would get, however, as New Mexico added two insurance runs in the ninth, and the final three Lobo hurlers allowed three hits in 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief.
Denny Clement (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up three hits and five earned runs in 1/3 of an inning while walking one and striking out one.
A&M got a solid outing from Chad Sherman in his first career start, as the junior allowed six hits and two earned runs over four innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Shane Minks had a strong appearance out of the bullpen, allowing five hits and one earned run in 3 2/3 innings of work. He did not walk a batter and fanned two.
Jaramillo improved to 2-0 after picking up the win in relief.
Lobo starter Kenny Toves also did not factor in the decision, giving up two hits, three runs (all earned) and three walks, while striking out four, over three innings.
The series concludes on Wednesday with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. The Aggies will send junior Scott Migl (0-0, 3.86 ERA) to the mound. Fans can listen to the action locally on WTAW-AM 1620 and free live video will be available on aggieathletics.com.

POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Rob Childress: "When you start talking about nine innings, where we have the leadoff runner on in seven of those and only come away with a run here and there, and we only get six hits on the night, that's a tribute to New Mexico's pitching. You have to give credit to them, they did an outstanding job. They also have a very good lineup, one through nine, have a great approach and they are hard to get out."
(on Chad Sherman start) "I couldn't have asked for more from Chad. We got four innings out of him in his first appearance at Texas A&M, and he did a really good job. I thought Shane Minks gave us a shot, kept it close there in the middle innings. We just weren't able to keep it close there in the ninth."
