BOISE, Idaho - The Texas A&M men's tennis team opened an important road trip with an impressive 6-1 win over No. 27 Boise State Friday at the Boas Tennis Center on the Boise State campus.
The Aggies improved to 4-4 overall, and will now head further west to take on No. 22 Washington at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sunday in Seattle, Wash.
"We played well in the doubles and won a road match against a quality opponent," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "It was good to get the bad taste out of our mouth from last week, because it was a tough one for us. To come back and play well was very important to us. We won quite a few close three-set matches that ended up being the difference."
A&M jumped on the Broncos (7-6) early by sweeping the double matches to take a quick 1-0 lead. The No. 6-ranked doubles team of senior Conor Pollock and sophomore Marcus Lunt and sophomore Wil Spencer won 8-6 at No. 3.
In singles, the Aggies upped their lead to 2-0 when No. 22-ranked Spencer handed No. 61 Feeder a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the No. 2 line. BSU made it 2-1 when No. 70 Meredith defeated Krajicek, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. A&M received its third point when No. 24 Pollock beat No. 26 Clancy Shields, 6-4, 6-4, at the top of the lineup. The Aggies clinched the victory when Grigorov rallied for his first career singles win with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision over Cristian Hodel at the No. 4 line. A&M finished out the 6-1 victory with wins from Lunt at No. 5 (6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Stanley Sarapanich) and sophomore Kayvon Karimi at No. 6 (6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (7) over Blane Shields). It was the fourth-straight win for Lunt.
"We needed a win under our belt," Denton said. "It was good for the morale of our team. This is just what the doctor ordered. This whole week, we focused on righting the ship and getting back in the right direction. We were able to do that today."
