Final Stats Game 1: Texas A&M 4, Kansas State 2
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Brooks Raley threw his second career complete game to lead No. 15 Texas A&M to a 4-2, come-from-behind win over Kansas State before 713 fans Friday in the first game of a doubleheader at Tointon Family Stadium.
Raley struck out 11, one shy of his career high, and allowed the league's second-best offense just three hits on the day. With the victory the Aggies improved to 21-12 and 8-5 in Big 12 play, while the Wildcats saw a three-game win streak snapped as they fell to 24-9 and 5-5.
It took a clutch eighth-inning rally, however, to help the Aggies earn their league-leading eighth conference win of the year.
Trailing 2-0 and entering the top of the eighth, Brett Parsons, hit a hard ground ball up the middle that was knocked down behind the second-base bag. The infield single set A&M up with runners on the corners and no outs.
Brodie Greene stepped to the plate and executed a perfect hit-and-run on the first pitch he saw, knocking the ball through the right side to score Gonzalez and move Parsons to third, cutting the K-State lead to 2-1.
The Aggies then called on pinch-hitter Joe Patterson who, on another hit-and-run, reached out and drove an outside fastball on the ground and just inside the bag at third. The double would score both Parsons and Greene, giving A&M its first lead of the afternoon. One out later, pinch runner Nick Anders would score from third on a Kyle Colligan groundout to third that made the score 4-2.
Raley then retired the `Cats in order in the eighth and allowed a lead triple to start the ninth, but turned a double play to retire the runner and then struck the final batter of the game out looking to nail down the win. It was the second complete game and longest outing of his career, besting an eight-inning effort in a complete-game loss at Texas last season. Friday also marked the second time this year and third time in his career that Raley has struck out 10 or more batters in a game.
Brodie Greene and Kevin Gonzalez had two hits apiece to lead the Aggies.
Raley allowed a hit to the first batter of the game and then retired the next 13 in a row to keep the game scoreless into the last of the fifth. It was there that K-State pushed the game's first run home without the benefit of a hit.
With one out, Jason King was hit by a 1-2 pitch, and moved to second on a Jordan Cruz sacrifice bunt. Daniel Dellasega then drew a full-count walk to put runners on the corners. With an 0-2 count to the next batter, Dellasega broke for second and was able to avoid two tags in the rundown, allowing King to score from third and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
King would add a one-out RBI double to left in the seventh that made the score 2-0.
Raley walked just one on the afternoon, and gave up hits in the first, seventh and ninth. He sat the side down in order five times on the afternoon.
Hoge lasted seven-plus, allowing four hits, one run and no walks while striking out four. James Allen (1-1) suffered the loss in relief, giving up four hits and three runs in two innings of work.
First pitch of game two of the doubleheader is set for 6:30 p.m.
