MANHATTAN, Kan. - Jordan Cruz drove in three runs and A.J. Morris picked up his nation-leading ninth win of the year to lead Kansas State to a 6-4 win over No. 15 Texas A&M in the second game of a doubleheader Friday night before 1,247 fans at Tointon Family Stadium.
A&M (21-13, 8-6) trailed 5-0 after four innings, but fought back off Morris to cut the lead to one in the seventh, but the Wildcats (25-9, 6-5) tacked on an insurance run and got 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn a doubleheader split.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 21-13 and 8-6 in Big 12 play, while the Wildcats improved to 25-9 and 6-5. A&M won the opener of the twinbill, 4-2.
"Offensively we were pretty good for about three innings," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "I felt like we had Morris right where we wanted him, but we made too many mistakes tonight. They weren't errors that showed up on the board, but it was bad baseball, which resulted in a loss. Tonight was extremely disappointing."
A three-run bottom of the second would stake Kansas State to an early lead off Aggie starter Alex Wilson. With one out and two in scoring position following a sacrifice bunt, Cruz lined a 2-2 pitch into right center field to bring home the first two runs of the game. He would take second base after the play was over, as the umpires ruled that time was not called after the base hit. Dane Yelovich cashed in on Cruz's steal of second one out later with an RBI single to right field that brought home the inning's third run.
K-State added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, courtesy a Jordan Cruz RBI triple and Rob Vaughn RBI bunt single.
The Aggies got to Morris in the sixth, as Kyle Colligan drove an opposite-field two-run home run over the fence in right that pulled A&M within three at 5-2.
Brodie Greene's fifth home run of the year, a solo shot down the left field line in the seventh, would cut the Wildcat lead to two. One batter later, Adam Smith lined a 2-2 pitch to the gap in left center field for his fourth double of the season. Colligan followed by lining a single past a diving Carter Jurica at second and into right field, scoring Smith and making the score 5-4.
Back-to-back two-out doubles by K-State provided a critical insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Justin Bloxom drove a 1-2 pitch off the base of the wall in center, and came home three pitches later on a shot down the line in left off the bat of Jason King.
A&M would get no closer, as Thomas Rooke allowed one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings of work for the `Cats to pick up his first save of the season.
Wilson (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up eight hits and five runs (all earned) in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out 10, tallying double-digit punchouts for the fourth time this year.
Morris (9-0) matched the school's single-season record for victories on the night, allowing seven hits and four earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. Morris, who had allowed one home run all season before Friday night, fanned nine and did not walk a batter.
The series concludes on Saturday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on WTAW-AM 1620 or worldwide free of charge on radioaggieland.com and aggieathletics.com.
