COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team took home a 9-1, five-inning win against Iowa State in its last regular season home game on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex to earn a split in the two-game series.
In front of 904 fans, seniors Holly Ridley, Erin Glasco and Savana Lloyd each saw time on the field and contributed to the Aggies' (29-18, 6-8 Big 12) run rule of the Cyclones (23-27, 5-11 Big 12).
Glasco was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Ridley went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and an RBI. Lloyd relieved starting pitcher Rhi Kliesing in the bottom of the fifth for the final out of the game - a strikeout.
Head coach Jo Evans said she could not think of a more appropriate ending to the game.
"I thought it was such a good moment," said Evans. "It gave me chills to see her come out and get a strikeout and to see the fans respond the way they did. I can't think of a better way for her to end Senior Day than with that big strikeout."
To start the game the Aggies got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first off the bat of Kliesing. The sophomore's RBI single to right center scored fellow sophomore Natalie Villarreal who reached an infield error.
A two-run home run to right field by Villarreal in the second increased the A&M lead to 3-0. Sophomore Kelsey Spittler was on base via a single.
Kliesing drove in pinch runner Andrea Tovar and Ridley in the third with a double to right center. The Pearland, Texas, native proceeded to score on a throwing error by the ISU catcher as sophomore Kelsey Spittler stole second.
Two doubles by Bianca Lopez and Sydni Jones in the top of the fourth plated the lone run of the day for the Cyclones.
The Aggies were not fazed by the ISU run and scored in their fourth straight inning with a bases-loaded, RBI single through the right side by Ridley. With one out, junior Bailey Schroeder picked up an RBI on an infield groundout before Ridley crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give A&M a 9-1 lead.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Lloyd entered the circle and fanned Lopez for the final out of the game.
"I'm really excited about how our team played today," said Evans. "They played fired up and got the crowd into it. That's their job. We've been talking about hitting throughout the lineup and today we really broke the bats open and got some good RBIs."
The Aggies finish the regular season with four away games this week beginning with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Baylor on Tuesday.
