COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M men's tennis team will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the country during the upcoming 2009-10 season.
Seven top 25 opponents highlight the Aggies' spring slate including three of the top 10 teams in last year's final Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Men's Tennis Rankings. A&M will play a total of 27 dual matches against the nation's best, 14 of which advanced to postseason play a year ago including four that reached the Sweet 16 or better at the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships held in College Station.
The Aggies will host a doubleheader with UT Pan American and Nicholls State in their season opener on Jan. 23, 2010, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, followed by back-to-back home dual matches with Fresno State on Jan. 29 and either Rice or Oklahoma State on Jan. 30 as part of the ITA Men's Tennis Kick-Off Weekend. The winner at each of the 15 campus sites across the country will advance to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships to be held on Feb. 11-14 hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
The first of two meetings with archrival Texas begins early in the season as the Aggies and Longhorns battle for the coveted Texas Cup on Feb. 5 at the Downtown Club at The Met in Houston. A&M and UT will later square off in the regular-season State Farm Lone Star Showdown finale slated for April 17 in Austin. Last season, the Aggies claimed the Lone Star Showdown trophy with a 4-3 victory over the `Horns on Senior Day which resulted in a second-place finish in the final Big 12 Conference standings.
A&M will travel on the road for non-conference competition to Tulsa on Feb. 7 in Tulsa, Okla., to LSU on Feb. 28 in Baton Rouge, La., to NCAA Sweet 16 participant Illinois on March 5 in Champaign, Ill., and NCAA runner-up Ohio State on March 7 in Columbus, Ohio.
The Aggies will have a total of six doubleheaders in the spring including a twin bill with Big Ten Conference power Wisconsin and Laredo Community College on Feb. 21, St. Edward's and old Southwest Conference rival TCU on Feb. 26, Lamar and 2006 national champion Pepperdine on March 19, UT Arlington and Rice on March 31 and UTSA and Big East Conference power Notre Dame on April 5 at the Mitchell Tennis Center. A&M will also match up with two NCAA Tournament participants in Cal on March 12 and Louisville on March 21.
Big 12 action commences with home dates versus Oklahoma on March 26 and Oklahoma State on March 28. Tough league road matches will later be played at Nebraska on April 2 in Lincoln, Neb., and Texas Tech on April 11 in Lubbock, Texas. A&M will host rival Baylor on April 7 in its final regular-season home match at the Mitchell Tennis Center, prior to traveling to the Big 12 Men's Tennis Championship on April 29-May 2 in Austin.
Fall tournament play will include the Midland Invitational on Sept. 18-20, Baylor Invitational on Sept. 25-27, ITA All-American on Oct. 2-11, UTSA Invitational on Oct. 9-10, Wilson/ITA Regionals on Oct. 24-27, Texas Invitational on Oct. 30-Nov. 1, and ITA Indoors on Nov. 5-8.
Last year, the Aggies (17-9) made their 16th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and finished No. 14 in the final national team rankings. They return eight letterwinners from last year's NCAA Sweet 16 squad.
