COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Stephen F. Austin scored all seven of its runs with two outs in the third inning and held on for a 7-6 win over Texas A&M Wednesday afternoon before 2,492 fans at Olsen Field.
"This was disappointing, and that's an understatement," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "We got two there in the second and built a lead, and you figure that it's not going to be a high-scoring day with the weather the way it was. Then we go right back out in the third, we're not able to finish the inning and they score all seven runs with two outs. We have to have a short memory, come out tomorrow, get better and look forward to this weekend."
The Aggies (3-1) had a golden chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, as pitcher John Stilson led off with a triple into the right field corner, but SFA pitcher Jason West got the next three batters in order to lock down the Lumberjacks' first win in College Station.
A&M got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the second off SFA starter Brett Rogers.
Designated hitter Joe Patterson led off with a deep double to center field and, one out later, a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Aggies. With two outs, Stilson flared a double into left center field to drive home Patterson and Joaquin Hinojosa with the game's first runs.
What started as a quiet third for the Lumberjack bats turned bad late for Texas A&M, as SFA (4-0) sent 12 to the plate and scored seven runs, all with two outs, to stake claim to a five-run lead.
With two on and two outs, Tanner Hines poked a single through the right side off Aggie starter Clayton Ehlert to drive home his squad's first tally of the day. The next batter, Darren Crabtree, hit a one-hopper that rocketed over the shoulder of Caleb Shofner at first and down the line, tying the game at two. Jarid Scarafiotti then followed with a double just inside the bag at third to score a pair and, after a hit batter, Bobby Loveless connected on a three-run home run to right to make the score 7-2.
Another outstanding outing by the bullpen would allow the Aggies to climb back into the contest, as freshman Michael Wacha and Stilson combined to allow three hits and punch out eight over the final 6 1/3 innings.
Shofner began the fourth with a walk and moved to third on a Hinojosa double. Brett Parsons followed with consecutive RBI groundouts to make the score 7-4.
After stranding a lead double in the fifth, A&M would cut the lead to one in the sixth, scoring a pair on back-to-back-to-back doubles to begin the inning by Patterson, Shofner and Hinojosa. Hinojosa would not get past third base in the frame, however, keeping the game a one-run affair.
Patterson finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Stilson was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Hinojosa added a pair of hits for the Aggies.
For SFA, Loveless had a game-high three RBIs and Michael Haynes a team-best 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Ehlert (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up eight hits and seven runs over 2 2/3 innings of work. He fanned three and did not walk a batter. Wacha gave up two hits and no walks over 4 1/3 shutout innings of relief, punching out six. Stilson moved to the mound from short and gave up a bunt infield single over two innings of work. He did not walk a batter and fanned two.
Rogers (1-0) picked up the win while allowing seven hits, six runs and three walks over five innings. He struck out one.
Texas A&M returns to action this weekend at the QTI Baylor Classic in Waco. The Aggies will face Western Kentucky on Friday at 6 p.m., the host Bears in a non-conference game on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Texas State on Sunday at 5 p.m.
