The No. 8 Texas A&M men's golf team shot a first-round seven-over-par 295 and stand in third after the first day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas on Friday.
The Aggies trail No. 4 Florida (+4, 292) and No. 12 UCLA (+6, 294), and lead No. 19 UNLV (+8, 296), No. 18 USC (+8, 296), No. 3 Texas (+9, 297), No. 13 Georgia (+10, 298), No. 15 Georgia Tech (+12, 300), No. 1 Oklahoma State (+14, 302), Tennessee (+14, 302), TCU (+14, 302), Arizona (+15, 303), No. 16 Texas Tech (+16, 304), No. 10 Arizona State (+17, 305) and New Mexico (+17, 305).
"It wasn't a bad first day for us," A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We had a few mental mistakes that led to some big numbers for us, but otherwise we played pretty solid golf. It's a great field and no one's going to run away and hide. The course is set up extremely tough, and the wind is supposed to start blowing hard tomorrow so we were going to have to be tougher than the conditions. I think we're playing really well and have a great gameplan on how to attack the golf course."
Senior Andrea Pavan led the way for the Aggies with two-under 70 and stands in a tie for third on the leaderboard. Pavan was two shots behind leaders Tyson Alexander of Florida and Johan de Beer of TCU, who both turned in scores of four-under par 68.
Rounding out the Aggie scorers were Cameron Peck (t16th, 74), Jordan Russell (t16th, 74), Ignacio Elvira (t46th, 77) and Geoff Shaw (t68th, 81). Competing as an individual, John Hurley shot an 80 and is tied for 68th.
