The third-seeded Texas A&M men's golf team will look to move into the semifinals of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championships on Monday when the Aggies resume play on Sunday's match against UNLV that was called for darkness at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.
The Aggies led in four of five matches against Rebels and were all-square in the other when the match was called due to fading light. The winner of the A&M-UNLV match will take on the winner of the San Diego-New Mexico match on Monday.
Against UNLV, the Aggies have already received a victory from sophomore Andrea Pavan leads UNLV's Derek Ernest, 3-up through 15 holes, junior Ignacio Elvira is 2-up through 15 on Eddie Olson, and junior Conrad Shindler is 2-up through 14 holes on Jeremiah Wooding. Freshman Cameron Peck is all-square with UNLV's Cody Smith through 15 holes.
"We were really shaky early in the match against UNLV," Aggie head coach J.T. Higgins said. "But we came together and rallied, and just tried to get one back on every hole. We started reeling them in and got back into the lead."
In the morning session, the Aggies defeated 14th-seeded Arizona, 3 and 2, with Peck, Elvira and Shindler tallying victories. Peck defeated Jonathan Khan, 2 and 1, Elvira beat Trent Redfern, 5 and 4, and Shindler knocked off Philip Bagdade, 4 and 3, to pace the Aggies. In the other matches, Arizona's Tarquin MacManus beat Pavan, 3 and 2, and Richard Saferian defeated Russell, 5 and 3.
"In the morning match we played really solid," Higgins said. "Andrea and Jordan lost matches but those were Arizona's two best players and they were playing on their home course. I was proud of the way the other three were able to get us back into the match, and enable us to take control against Arizona."
