COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Missouri scored six times in the decisive third inning en route to a 13-4 win over No. 21 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon before 3,452 fans at Olsen Field.
The loss dropped the Aggies, who still earned the series victory, to 17-6 and 4-2 in Big 12 play. The Tigers improved to 13-8 and 1-2.
"It was another disappointing Sunday in that we weren't able to finish a sweep," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "Give their hitters credit, they got the big hits when they counted. I think they scored seven or eight of their runs today with two outs, and we just weren't able to finish some innings. It wasn't like we didn't have our opportunities, they were right there in front of us. We didn't get them and Missouri did."
Missouri got off to a quick start with a two-out rally in the Tigers' first at-bat. Aaron Senne singled to right center and Brett Nicholas followed by flaring a hit that landed inside the left-field line. Designated hitter Andreas Plackis then delivered a full-count single to right that scored both and staked Mizzou to a 2-0 lead.
The Aggies answered right back, as Brodie Greene launched a solo home run to right in the first and Gregg Alcazar added a two-run shot in the second-the first round-tripper of his career-to put Texas A&M ahead, 3-2.
MU sent nine to the plate in the third, however, scoring six times on six hits to go up by five runs. Following a lead walk, a base hit and then back-to-back doubles by Senne and Nicholas pushed three runs home. After an RBI single by Blake Brown and a run-scoring double by Andrew Thigpen chased Aggie starter Clayton Ehlert, Dane Opel greeted reliever Nick Fleece with an RBI single back through the box that made the score 8-3.
Greene tripled with one out in the fifth and would come home on an RBI groundout by Joe Patterson for the Aggies' last run of the afternoon.
The Tigers would add single runs in the fourth and ninth innings and three in the sixth.
Mizzou pounded out 17 hits on the day and were led by a 4-for-6, two-RBI effort by Senne. Nicholas was 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs and four other Tigers had two hits apiece.
Alcazar was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two RBIs, while Greene and Brandon Wood also had multi-hit afternoons.
Ehlert (1-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight hits and eight runs over 2 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five.
"I'm disappointed not in Clayton, but for Clayton," Childress said. "I feel like his stuff's been very, very good the last couple of times out but he just doesn't have a whole lot to show for it."
Ryan Clubb (3-0) earned the victory in relief for Missouri, giving up a run and four hits over 2 2/3 innings of work.
Texas A&M hits the road for only the second time this year on Tuesday when the Aggies open a four-game road swing at Texas State. First pitch at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos is set for 6:35 p.m. Sophomore lefty Ross Hales will be making his first appearance of the season as he is slated to get the starting nod.
NOTES: Texas A&M leads the all-time series with Mizzou, 39-28-1 ... despite the loss, the Aggies still took the series from the Tigers and now have won eight of the 14 all-time Big 12 series between the schools ... A&M has started Big 12 play at 4-2, matching the 1998 squad for third-best league start in school history ... the only two seasons where the Aggies have had a better Big 12 start were in 1999 (6-0) and 2002 (5-1) ... Joe Patterson had an 11-game hit streak snapped ... it also marked the first time in the last 37 games that Patterson did not reach safely (hit, walk or HBP) ... game-time temperature was 64 degrees with clear skies and winds blowing in from center at 17 miles per hour.
