COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Brandon Workman tossed his third complete game and first shutout of the season to pitch No. 3 Texas to an 8-0 win over Texas A&M and a series sweep Sunday afternoon before 7,025 fans at Olsen Field.
Workman (7-1) scattered four hits, fanned eight and walked just one batter, using 118 pitches to pick up his seventh win of the year. The victory was the Longhorns' 11th in a row in Big 12 action as they improved to 30-7 and 13-2. The Aggies, meanwhile, lost their sixth straight and dropped to 20-14-1 and 6-8-1.
"Our guys competed extremely hard today and I thought Ross Stripling was outstanding on the mound," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "He gave us as good an effort as he has given us all year long. When Ross made a mistake, Texas didn't miss them. Texas is a very, very talented team and they are playing very, very well right now. With the four guys they run out there on the mound, if they get a three- or four-run lead, it's hard to overcome."
Kevin Keyes continued his hot hitting and provided all the offense UT would need in the fourth inning with a two-out, three-run home run to center field off A&M starter Ross Stripling. The long ball--Keyes' ninth of the season--broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Horns to a 3-0 lead.
Texas added a Jordan Etier solo blast in the fifth and four late runs to put the game away.
Stripling (3-3) lasted a career-high seven innings and fanned a personal-best 10 on the day. He allowed six hits, four earned runs and a pair of walks.
Caleb Shofner led the Aggies with a two-hit afternoon, while Russell Moldenhauer, Cameron Rupp and Etier had two hits apiece for Texas.
A&M continues its homestand on Tuesday when the Aggies host Rice at Olsen Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
"It's going to come back to us, I truly believe that, and our players believe that," Childress said. "We're going to continue to get out there and improve each and every day. You don't get to catch your breath in the league we play in and the location we're at. We have a great team coming in this Tuesday in Rice and another tough challenge this weekend with OU."
