COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team gave up five home runs and fell 14-1 to No. 11 Missouri on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex.
In front of 1,051 fans, the Aggies (35-13, 6-6 Big 12) scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning off of an RBI double by junior Rhi Kliesing.
Five of the Tigers' (36-8, 6-6 Big 12) 10 hits were home runs as they extended their winning streak to nine straight games.
"Today was really disappointing," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "It's tough when you get behind early like that. It takes the wind out of your sails. We have to have our players ready to go every game and have our pitchers get ahead of hitters. That's the only way we're going to have a chance against a team that's very aggressive like Missouri. We're also going to have to have a really short memory, and get in there and play a better game tomorrow."
Missouri came out hitting the ball hard in its first at bats and jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind solo home runs from Catherine Lee and Ashley Fleming.
The Aggies answered in the bottom half of the first and took back a run with Kliesing's line-drive double a bounce away from the right center wall. Freshman Meagan May scored from first on the hit to bring A&M within one, 2-1.
Mizzou, however, blasted two more long balls in the fourth to increase its lead to 6-1. Pinch hitter Lindsey Muller lifted a three-run shot before Marla Schweisberger's solo homer.
A&M moved two runners into scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but could not push a run across.
The Tigers then went on to add eight runs in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Rhea Taylor.
Jana Hainey (7-0) picked up the win in the circle after giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out three.
Sophomore Rebecca Arbino (18-9) was saddled with the loss. She allowed six runs on five hits, walked one and fanned four. Kliesing threw one inning in relief, giving up eight runs on five hits with one K.
Tallying hits for the Aggies were freshmen Sydney Shannon and Melissa Dumezich, while Kliesing led the team going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Texas A&M returns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. for a game that is televised nationally on ESPN. Seniors Macie Morrow, Alex Reynolds and Bailey Schroeder will be honored at the Aggie Softball Complex following the game.
