The Texas A&M women's golf team played well above its pre-tournament ranking with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships on Friday at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
The Aggies entered the NCAA Championships ranked No. 24 by both Golfweek and Golfstat, but were as high as ninth in standings before finishing the tournament in a tie for 11th at 31-over with Auburn. It was the Aggies' fourth-highest NCAA team finish in school history and gives head coach Trelle McCombs two top 11 finishes in four seasons at A&M.
“Overall we had a good tournament,” McCombs said. “We couldn't buy a putt to save our lives today. It just wasn't our day on the greens. I'm very proud of our freshmen for really stepping up. That says a lot for the future of our program. My seniors enjoyed their day all in all and finished their careers on a high note.”
A&M and Auburn finished behind champion Purdue (+1), USC (+2), Alabama (+5), Arizona State (+9), Arizona (+14), UCLA (+17), Vanderbilt (+18), Duke (+27), Oklahoma State (+27) and Florida State (+30).
The Aggies were led by senior Julia Boland, who placed in a tie for 23rd at 4-over with rounds of 72-78-69-3=292. Boland's score tied Ashley Freeman's record for lowest 72-hole total at the NCAA Championships in school history (292 by Freeman in 2008).
Junior Sarah Beth Davis tied for 39th with rounds of 76-74-72-73=295. Senior Ashley Freeman placed in a tie for 94th with rounds of 77-74-75-79=305. Freshman Chloe Garner tied for 118th with rounds of 80-83-76-76=315.
Rounding out the team standings were Virginia (+32), South Carolina (+34), Pepperdine (+34), New Mexico (+37), Texas (+37), Tulane (+41), TCU (+47), Tennessee (+47), Kent State (+48), Oregon (+66) and San Jose State (+66).
