COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M rode a four-run first inning and a 15-hit attack to a 10-6 win over Dallas Baptist Thursday evening in the series opener before 2,663 fans at Olsen Field.
The Aggies (27-17-1) built a seven-run lead through four innings before the Patriot bats got going. On the night, six of the nine hits by DBU (24-21) were of the extra-base variety. The win was A&M's seventh in its last 10 games.
"Our guys know what Dallas Baptist is all about," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "Offensively, they're not going to go away. Barret went out and gave us a solid start, our guys got off on the right foot and we were able to build on that."
DBU, ranked 10th nationally in home runs, played long ball in the fifth and sixth to climb back into the game. Travis Meiners hit homers in both frames to pull the Patriots within three. A&M answered however, rallying with two outs to score two in the last of the sixth to regain the momentum for Texas A&M.
"With two outs and nobody on, Ty Naquin has one of the toughest at-bats of the year for us," Childress said. "We were able to come back and get two runs and that inning was huge, I think maybe the biggest of the game."
Joe Patterson, who has 15 hits over his last seven outings, finished the game with three RBIs. Brodie Greene and Adam Smith had three hits apiece to highlight another strong showing by the middle of the Aggie lineup.
Jason Krizan was a perfect 3-for-3 for Dallas Baptist while Meiners drove in three runs.
Aggie junior Barret Loux (8-2) recorded his eighth win of the campaign, allowing six hits, three earned runs and five walks through six innings. He fanned seven on the night.
Will Lane (3-4) took the loss, issuing 11 hits and seven runs over five innings.
The series continues Friday night with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Aggie sophomore Ross Stripling (4-3, 4.31) will take the mound against DBU junior Brandon Williamson (6-3, 5.74). Tickets are available at the gate or online at tickets.12thmanfoundation.com.
