COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M men's tennis team, who reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the second consecutive season, finished No. 10 nationally in the final Campbell/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Monday.
It marked the highest final national ranking for the Aggies since being ranked No. 7 at the end of the 2001 season. A&M turned in the second-most wins in school history with a 25-7 overall record, 18 of those victories over ranked opponents under fourth-year head coach Steve Denton and assistant coach Bob McKinley.
For the second-straight year, the Aggies finished second in the Big 12 Conference with a 5-1 mark in addition to winning 18 of their last 21 matches of the season including a 13-match win streak from March 12 through April 11 - the second longest winning stretch in program history. A&M was one of only 10 schools in the country to make a return to the NCAA Round of 16 in back-to-back seasons.
Co-Big 12 Player of the Year and All-Big 12 selection Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) finished the season ranked No. 16 nationally in the final ITA singles rankings followed by Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 selection Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.) at No. 36. Both earned ITA All-America status, Krajicek in singles and doubles, and Dadamo in doubles. It marked the fourth All-America nod for Krajicek and first for Dadamo.
The Aggie duo of Dadamo and Krajicek also finished No. 6 nationally in the final ITA doubles rankings with a 25-11 overall record and 19-9 mark in dual match play. They were joined by Big 12 No. 4 singles champion Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) who were ranked No. 33. Grigorov and Lunt ended the season with a 15-2 overall record and nine-match winning streak. Lunt tied former players Ryan Newport, Mark Weaver and Bernardo Martinez for the A&M single-season record with an impressive 24-6 dual mark in doubles.
A&M returns all but one player from its NCAA Round of 16 squad for the 2010-11 campaign.
