OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla - Former Texas A&M All-American shortstop and assistant coach Jennifer McFalls accepted a coaching position with the 2010 USA Softball Women's National Team, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced.
McFalls replaces Barb Jordan and is coaching at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship, July 7-11, in Surrey, B.C., and exhibition games, July 13-14, in Whitehorse, Yukon.
McFalls was the starting shortstop for the Aggies from 1991-94 and led the team in batting average, hits, total bases and slugging percentage every season. One of the nation's most formidable batters and talented all-around defensive players during her collegiate career, the Grand Prairie, Texas, native set seven A&M all-time career batting records, staking claim to more titles than any other player in school history. McFalls was recognized as the best shortstop in the nation in 1993 and became A&M's ninth player in school history to be named to the NSCA All-American first team.
McFalls, who served as an assistant coach for the Aggie softball team from 1995-97, competed for the USA Softball national Team from 1994-2000. She struck gold at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in USA's 2-1 victory over Japan in the gold medal game. McFalls, who also scored the only run in USA's 1-0 win against Australia to send the Americans to the gold medal game, was making her first appearance on the USA Olympic Team after serving as an alternate on the 1996 Olympic Team that won the first gold medal in the sport's history during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga.
McFalls also represented the U.S. and A&M at numerous world class competitions, including the 1998 ISF Women's World Championships in which she helped USA win its fourth consecutive world crown. In addition, McFalls was a member of the USA gold medal team at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada.
